Osun Government Says UNIOSUN Follows Federal-ASUU Agreement as VC Tenure Dispute Continues

Fernanda Ribeiro·September 12, 2026·2 min read

The Osun State government has said Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has consistently complied with the agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), according to Vanguard News. The government also defended the legal framework governing the institution, Daily Post Nigeria reports.

The statement comes amid an ongoing dispute over the tenure of the UNIOSUN Vice-Chancellor. ASUU has criticized Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke for extending the VC's tenure, with the union arguing that the move sets a bad precedent for other governors, according to Vanguard News and The Guardian Nigeria News.

A group has separately called on ASUU and the government to resolve the UNIOSUN VC crisis through dialogue, Punch Newspapers reports.

The government's position, as carried by Vanguard News, is that the university has always operated in line with the federal-ASUU agreement. It has also pointed to what it describes as a legal governance framework for the institution, per Daily Post Nigeria.

The disagreement has drawn reactions from multiple quarters, with ASUU maintaining its opposition to the tenure extension and a third party urging both sides to talk. The government has not shifted from its stance that UNIOSUN's actions comply with existing agreements.

What to watch next: whether ASUU and the Osun government enter dialogue over the VC tenure, and whether the dispute affects operations at UNIOSUN.
